What toy or possession from childhood was special to you?
That was the team-building question one week.
A male colleague in his early thirties said, “It was a toy my Dad brought back from one of his business trips. It let me know he was thinking of me when he was away from home.”
The rest of the team had various answers, and our meeting moved on to business topics.
A few months later, my male colleague again mentioned the toy, laughed, and called it, ‘plastic trash’.
Walking through the store one day, I saw the toy on the shelf. So I bought it, wrapped it, and shipped it to my colleague.
The world may think I spent hard-earned money on plastic trash.
And my colleague is kind and gracious, so I may never know what he really thinks of the gift.
But I wasn’t buying a plastic toy. I was buying a memory. And a reminder that no matter where he is, his father is thinking of him.
I also received a precious gift.
The reminder that no matter what, God is thinking of me. And gives gifts that let me know He loves me.

That was such a kind thing to do! I’d have to say my Barbie dolls were pretty important. I collected them all. And everything Barbie. I actually sold them some years back to some guy in L.A., but kept one for my own memory’s sake. I also loved games. I had “Mystery Date” which was mentioned in The Santa Clause. I loved, loved, loved that game! Playing board games with friends was a natural part of my childhood and one I hate to see overlooked today.
Thanks for reading and for your comments. Don’t know if you saw it, but I have a blog where I wrote about The Mystery Date game. https://jonivance.com/blog/favorite-board-game/ I loved board games and Barbies as well. 🙂
What a sweet thing for you to do for your colleague. I loved paper dolls. I enjoyed cutting out their clothes and being able to dress them in so many different outfits.
I loved paper dolls, too! Thanks for sharing great memories. 🙂
My baby dolls were my favorite toy. I think I loved dolls because It meant love to me.
I love it!!! Reminds me how sweet we all were as children. How much we loved our toys. Thanks so much for sharing.
