The Monkey’s Paw is a 1902 short story by W.W. Jacobs. Classified as a mystery, the story also has a supernatural, creepy factor.
I prefer mysteries I can try to solve, so this story doesn’t qualify.
But every story teaches me something, and this story reminded me of several things.
The first is that I don’t like creepy.
But there were more important reminders. When I try to make events or life turn out the way I want, I sometimes only think about the positive outcome. And I don’t always consider the negative consequences that may impact me or others.
The characters in The Monkey’s Paw certainly didn’t consider the negative. But that’s what they got.
The story also reinforces that compelling fiction reveals the truth about life. And the best fiction shows truth without sermonizing.
So while this wasn’t my preferred kind of story, it showed the truth about considering all of the consequences.
