Surprises Happen

The news reported that when a base jumper launched off a cliff, his parachute got snagged on the rocks. As he hung by the parachute cords until rescue, those cords were the only thing that kept him from plummeting to his death.

Part of what he depended on was taken away.

I bet he was grateful for the cords.

Life Happens

I’ve had things I depended on taken away:

— Jobs due to layoff

— Neighbors, doctors, hair stylists, and a feeling of safety when I’ve moved to a new place

— Loved ones who grew distant or passed away

Sometimes the loss left me hanging off a cliff with only a few strands of support left.

The Cords

A single strand can support. And of course, a double strand is stronger. But a three-stranded cord is very hard to break.

With the help of a friend, I can weather many losses.

And some people interpret Ecclesiastes 4:12 about the three-stranded cord to be: themselves, another person, and God.

But there’s another interpretation that’s even more powerful.

When I reach the end of my energy and resources, and just can’t go any further, there’s only one three-stranded cord that matters:

God the Father, Jesus the Son of God, and God’s Holy Spirit

I’m grateful for all the cords that support me.

But I’m most thankful for the cord that always holds, always rescues, and never fails.
