Some of the groups I attend ask if anyone needs prayer about anything. When I hear the requests, I’m reminded that people are like icebergs in many ways.
An Iceberg
It’s estimated that 85% of an iceberg is below the surface of the water.
— Unseen.
— A solid mass formed over years — or longer.
— As it travels, the weather can melt it. Changing its shape, altering its course.
— And if a storm is powerful enough, the iceberg could break into smaller pieces. Or perhaps be destroyed.
— It has no intelligence.
— It cannot plot its course or change to avoid what could damage it.
People Are Like Icebergs
Some people may reveal more, but most of us keep the majority of our thoughts and emotions to ourselves.
— Unseen.
— A solid mass of life experiences formed over years — or longer.
— As we travel through life, events and people can impact us. Changing us, altering our course.
— And if a life storm is powerful enough, it can break us into pieces. And even destroy us.
And Yet Different
But we aren’t like icebergs in the most important ways.
While we can’t change the past, or even prevent some of life’s storms:
— We are intelligent and can use the wisdom of our life experiences.
— We can assess and plot our course.
— And sometimes, we can avoid events or people who can damage us.
And we can reveal a bit more of ourselves, ask for help, and not go it alone in the vast ocean of our lives.

When I’m in groups that ask for prayer requests I start thinking of what I want prayer for but then I start sweating, my deodorant disappears, and I go down the list and on each one check… you can’t share that… they’ll learn too much about you.
So you hit the nail of the head with this post. I am definitely an iceberg. I think my goal is not to share because of what you said… “We can avoid events or people who can damage us.” …. if we remain a mystery. And I definitely want to avoid more damage.
Thank you for sharing your heart, Jane. Praying for you and everyone as we try to find people who are safe and who can help and support us.
Thank you, Joni. Enjoyed this post.
Thanks for reading, Tim. I appreciate your faithfulness to read and comment on my blogs.
