When I was a child, I obeyed even when I didn’t understand. Sometimes willingly. Sometimes not.
And if the adult deemed me to be disobedient, I suffered their wrath and their punishment.
Blind Obedience Is Servitude
If I’m blindly obedient as an adult:
— I WILLINGLY ignore any truth that might contradict the person to whom I’m obedient.
— I WILLINGLY relinquish some, if not all, of my power to do that person’s will.
— I’m at the mercy of the person to whom I’ve submitted.
And if the person deems me to be disobedient, I suffer their wrath and their punishment.
Clear-Eyed Obedience Is Freedom
If I’m a clear-eyed, clear-minded adult:
— I take the time to learn about any person with whom I choose to associate. And I weigh the pros and the cons to determine if their values align with what God wants me to do.
— I decide why, when, how, and how much of my time and life energy I spend with that person.
— I’m not at anyone’s mercy.
And I can choose to end a relationship if another person tries to punish me because I didn’t do what they wanted.
Grateful, Freely-Given Obedience Is Everything
By God’s grace and mercy, I’m not blindly obedient — not even to God.
— Throughout my life, God has shown His love and protection. I want to do what He wants me to do.
— I know by giving my will to God, He gives me all the power I need to accomplish His plans.
— God’s mercy is unending, all-encompassing, and always heals.
Jesus took on the punishment and paid for any wrongdoing and disobedience I’ll ever commit.
And because of that, I’m free — to willingly serve God for eternity.
Which is everything that’s worth anything.

Thank you, Joni. So much to be thankful for and that thankfulness makes me want to obey.
Thanks, Tim. Yes, gratitude for what God gives is always one of the things that helps me.
“What helps you choose freedom?” Humm… Maybe great blogposts like this, that make you think about who you are obeying and why? Maybe wise counsel from wise friends that love God and love you. And, maybe God’s Words that say, “…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus…. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV)
