Healthy Ways to Handle Change

Handling change in a healthy way is a challenge for me, so I don’t particularly care for Heraclitus’ quote. Actually, what I don’t care for, is that his quote is true.

As long as my life seems to be going well — or acceptably — or even tolerably, I’m fine with the status quo. Behind it all of course, is the quest for safety and security.

And I sure do like feeling safe and secure.

I strive for safety and security. I pray for safety and security. When something happens to disrupt my world, I devote all my efforts to getting back to a state of safety and security.

Change Will Happen

When it becomes evident that something has got to change, or is going to change whether I like it or not, anxiety and fear become my companions. And unfortunately, those emotions arise whether I view the change as being positive or negative.

The vortex of my mind and emotions opens.

What’s going to happen? Can I handle it? Will it be the worst thing to happen? Will there be anything good about it? What will my new normal be? Can I stop it? Can I control the outcome?

Healthy Ways to Handle Change

The only thing that really helps me handle change in a healthy way is to ask God:

— For clarity about how to view what is happening.

— How He wants me to react, or not react.

— What action He wants me to take or not take.

— To remind me that He WILL and DOES turn everything for my good and His glory in His time and way, because I love God and I’m called according to His purpose.

When I remember that God loves me, and He has planned a good life for me, it helps me feel safe and secure even in changing circumstances.

Upcoming Writing Changes

Speaking of change, I received some valuable insights recently about my blog and website. The short version is that I’ll be changing what I write a bit. I’ve run those changes through the checklist I listed above. I still plan to write something encouraging/inspirational once a month, but I want to also write blogs about mysteries, the craft of writing, and maybe some history or something just for fun.

I always love the comments from my readers, and I’m really looking forward to hearing if you think the different categories are helpful and entertaining. Thanks in advance for all your constructive feedback. And of course, I’ll take all of the high praise you write as well. 😉

  1. Lately, I feel like every day brings some change in my life that is not very helpful to me. Mostly, I handle it by seeing if God has any answers for me in His Bible, or dreaming of a day when I can climb off the roller coaster and have a nice, easy, carefree day.

I always enjoy all your posts and look forward to them each week. I’m really looking forward to all the changes you are making and what your new posts will look like. Your creativity with words and stories inspires me. Can’t wait to keep reading each week!!
