Not every decision has negative consequences. Naturally, I like the outcome of those.
But some decisions cause negative consequences that range from mild discomfort to really long-lasting, severe circumstances.
And unfortunately, this has even happened when I’ve done my best to analyze the pros and cons of the decision, consulted “experts”, and prayed for guidance.
Years ago, I purchased a home that was beautiful. My dream home as a matter-of-fact. The house only had one problem: the previous owner was a chain smoker. As a lifelong NON-smoker, my “experienced” realtor assured me that the stench could be removed by painting the walls and airing out the place. Since I had no experience with that, I believed her and thought I was making an informed (prayed about) decision.
If you’re cringing and your heart is breaking for me, I appreciate your support and empathy. Suffice it to say that after spending way too much money trying to eradicate the never-say-die, unbearable stink, I put the house back on the market after six months. I don’t recommend that course of action from a financial standpoint.
Did I hear God wrong? I didn’t think so.
What I do know is that even with the consequences, God was still with me. He didn’t say, “Joni, this house stinks so bad I can’t be in here with you.”
I’m grateful for that. In addition, the neighbors were caring and did what they could to help.
AND…
Once I put it up for sale, God sent a buyer within a few months. I purchased a more beautiful home in that neighborhood – a home with a premium view of the mountains. And the neighbors continued to be wonderful and loving and nurturing.
What did I learn?
If I smell (or perceive) anything unpleasant when I’m house-hunting, do NOT buy that house.
Interview realtors and tell each one my past experiences. And of course, let them know (in my nicest, no-nonsense voice) that I expect honesty from them.
What did God remind me of?
Even when I do my best to make a decision, things might not turn out to be problem-free. That doesn’t mean that I “heard God wrong” or that I “did something wrong”. God may just want to prove to me once again that….
No matter what, God will instruct me and teach me the way I should go (from moment to moment) in any situation.
He will counsel me and watch over me.
He will prosper me and not let me fall.
He never leaves me.
He has a bright future and hope planned for me – in His time and way.
When has a decision resulted in God reminding you He watches over you and never leaves?

“He has a bright future and hope planned for me – in His time and way.” That is so true! We make the best decisions we can with what we know at the time. The challenge is trusting God to help us fix it when it doesn’t work out and being patient while He works it out in His time. Thanks for this message, Joni!
Thanks for your comments and support. I appreciate it!
There have been too many decisions to count, from which He has rescued me. I love the lessons that can be learned from your experience in buying a house. So glad it turned out good in the end.
