What Keeps You Reading?

When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote The Final Problem, he thought he’d solved his biggest problem with Sherlock Holmes. He killed off the detective.

Why? Because Conan Doyle wanted to write what he considered to be serious literature — words that really mattered.

What the famed author hadn’t expected was the reaction of Sherlock’s fans. Readers struck back by canceling subscriptions to the magazine that published Holmes’ stories.

It was more than apparent that his readers felt his words already mattered.

As the years passed, the pressure from readers for more Sherlock stories hadn’t subsided. So the author brought Holmes back. And faithful readers scarfed down the stories as eagerly as they had before the detective slipped on the rocks of Reichenbach Falls.

As a writer, I understand having the motivation to write something that I think will “matter more” than the mysteries stories I have in progress.

The last few months, I’ve added topics besides just inspirational posts to my blog.

I have faithful readers who check out my blog each week, and comment when my words are helpful to them.

I don’t know how Conan Doyle felt about his readers. He made his living by writing, so his readers were certainly vital.

All I know is that I’m very thankful for every one of my readers.

While my murder mysteries are in the works, are there topics I could blog about that would be of interest or helpful to you?

What topics interest and help you, and keep you reading?
