Words Matter

Most writers are sticklers about words. We ponder and struggle and write and rewrite.

And not just because we’re word nerds or because certain words grate on our nerves.

Writers know every word matters.

Because words convey emotion.

And meaning.

And intent.

My silly example about “fall” versus “autumn” is meant to be humorous. I meant to add a bit of levity to the day of anyone who reads those words. And hopefully give a brief reprieve from life and its serious issues.

But it reminds me that I must be intentional about every word I write or speak. I must weigh the emotion and meaning, and most importantly, my intent behind the words.

Because my words can help as many people as they can harm.

So I pray that all of my words are truthful and helpful.

In reality, I know I can’t control how people perceive the words I speak or write.

But I am responsible for my intent behind each word I speak or write.

I’m grateful I can ask for God to direct my thinking and put a guard over my mouth so I can use words that help and not harm.

  1. It’s amazing how important words are and as you point out—how we use them. I think pausing is the best way for me to use helpful words. It gives me a minute or two to think about whether what I’m fixing to say or write will offend or take someone down.

  2. Thank you, Joni. Our words and how we communicate them are so important. Great reminder.

  3. Great insights, Joni. I try to remember and apply Ephesians 4:29–to edify others with my words and let my speech give grace. Don’t always do a great job but that’s my goal! Blessings!
